Underwood Park, Priestdale
We've been searching throughout Brisbane and its surrounds for some time now, looking for the best entertainment for our little ones. They love parks and playgrounds, which is great because you will find them everywhere and best of all, they are free! There is such a wide range of parks around, from tiny local park in the suburbs (we have one about 500m from our house!), through to the awesome multi-use facilities like South Bank, Roma Street Parklands and Robelle Domain. There are also some really nice traditional parklands like New Farm Park or Queens Park in Ipswich - they all have something different to offer and our kids love them all! Best of all, there are so many so you can explore and experience different ones whenever you feel the need. But we think that we may have found their favourite - an awesome facility called Underwood Park (which is actually in Priestdale), in the city of Logan!
We haven't spent that much time exploring Logan just yet and so we hadn't visited the park before, but we were in the area checking out another attraction - the Chung Tian Buddhist temple (which is just down the road) - and we were looking for a spot to pull up for a picnic! It is located roughly about 30 minutes’ drive south from the CBD, so it is certainly more convenient for those on the south side of the river!
The park is a huge complex, with lawns, barbeques, sporting grounds, skate park, bmx track, duckponds, clubhouses and playgrounds, so upon arrival at the complex, you might just want to go for a little drive through just to familiarise yourself with the park as a whole. We visited during the week, but it is probably worth pointing out that with the number of sporting facilities and clubhouses in the complex, we would expect Underwood Park to get quite busy on the weekend. There lots of carparking spaces provided, but with so much going on in this facility there might be some times were parking spaces are limited. After driving through, the kids knew exactly where we should be - the playgrounds! What an amazing park this is! There is a complex of a few different and distinct playgrounds - the kids managed to settle in one playground only long enough for a couple of photos before running off to the next - they had so much fun! There is your traditional, council style park of climbing, obstacles, slides and sand - there are a couple of pedal-powered contraptions, one tandem rail-bike and another that flies around in the air! There is also an awesome fort-style playground called FUNderwood Hollow - it is a Spielart adventure playground (a fantasy-style design using the natural shapes of the timber) which looks fantastic and of course gets a lot of attention! It was great for all of our kids, there were ramps for our toddler to climb on, and the soft-fall floor provided some reassurance for us parents, while the older boys just got into everything!
Along with the playgrounds, there are also a couple of gardens and lakes! We didn't spend too much time in the gardens, but we did check out one of the large lakes which had heaps of ducks (our little girl loves ducks!) and other water birds! Feeding the ducks was a great wind-down after the excitement of the playgrounds and the little ones really enjoyed getting so close to them. There is also a wooden walkway around the lake - we didn't venture onto this as we couldn't pry the kids away from the playground, but again, it may be a great little wind-down after a serious play! Well, we loved this park. There is so much to see and it's a huge complex, so I think that this park would have something for everyone! We didn't get to all areas of the park, so no doubt we will have to schedule in another visit, but the playground is right up there with some of the best parks that we have been to. The number of different things that you could get into while in this complex must see this spot ranked very highly when comparing the parks and playgrounds in the Brisbane area! This one just about ticks all the boxes!
