Where is it: Carindale Recreational Reserve, Carindale
What's it all about: Brisbane's biggest billycart races where they race both traditional (rope steering) and modified billycarts!
How can I join in: Pre-register online or turn up on the day! You don't even need your own billycart - the Rotary Club (who organises this great event) have a number of billycarts that you can loan and race!
Tell me more: The Brisbane Billycart Championships are held every year in Carindale and are always very popular days out! They have races from 4 years old and up who race in age classes in either traditional or modified billycarts down a grass track lined with bales of hay. Even though you can just turn up and race one of the Rotary Club's great loan billycarts, we think that there's more enjoyment to be had in building your own billycart from scratch! It's great fun letting the little ones help out building or painting, and they always get a great sense of satisfaction when they contribute! Plus, you get to practice a bit which is heaps of fun!
It's free to come along as a spectator and you will always have plenty of action to watch! The races run through quickly and there's always something happening - the past couple of years the Green Heart Fair has been running in conjunction with the billycarts so there have been plenty of activities to get involved in. The mascot races are always very popular and you might even get to see some of the local politicians face off against each other on the track! For our entry into the races, we built a Thomas the Tank Engine-inspired billycart to enter into the modified category. We didn't win (we had a couple of crashes) but our little billycart driver had lots of fun and was very happy to take part!
Where is it: Either in Carindale Recreational Reserve, Carindale or 7th Brigade Park in Chermside
What's it all about: Green Heart Fair is organised by Brisbane City Council and aims to promote sustainable and healthy living!
How can I join in: Just turn up and get involved in these great, free events! You'll be sure to pick up some great hints and ideas, you might even be able to take home some free native plants!
Tell me more: Held twice a year, the Green Heart Fair is a really fun family day out which hopes to inspire and educate about sustainable living as well as entertain! This fair has heaps of exhibits and activities broken up into different areas or zones so that you can look into the things that interest you. We started our visit at the Kids' Hub - an area specifically for kids with fun rides, heaps of craft with a sustainability focus and even some music exhibits. The Octonauts also paid a visit to the main stage and we couldn't resist that one! There were are also cooking displays, sports programs, gardening information (including free native plants) and lots of food options. We also got to sit up in a garbage truck which all the kids got excited about! There really was so much to do - you could have a really full day out here!
