What's it all about: A whole weekend celebrating and learning about France and French culture!
Tell me more: For over 7 years now, Brisbane has been able to forward to a weekend of enjoying and experiencing the sights, sounds and perhaps more importantly the tastes of France with the Brisbane French Festival, or Le Festival! as it is now known. South Bank transforms into a sea of the tricolours of red, white and blue for the festival, and although there are lots of different things to experience - the food is definitely a highlight! Live music, dancing, roaming performers and even a dedicated kids area -'le mini Festival' round out a great day's entertainment! Another really popular aspect (and with good reason) of this festival is the wine tasting pavilion, where you can browse or sample from a large range of French wines by river! Je m'amuse tellement!
Where is it: Cultural Forecourt, South Bank Parklands!
What's it all about: A parade of the most amazing lanterns - all in the interest of promoting a welcoming and multicultural Queensland!
How can I join in: Get on down to South Bank to show your support to our new Queenslanders and marvel at the awesome lanterns! You could even bring your own lantern!
Tell me more: Multicultural Development Australia puts on a really fun event in the Luminous Lanterns parade! It's part of the 'Create Welcome' celebrations (MDA also has a number of events on during Create Welcome Week which runs a week or so after Luminous Lanterns) and you will see many different cultures and groups parading their lanterns! They look great as they meander through South Bank just on dusk! And as this is a multicultural event, you are sure to find plenty of different food options and heaps of cultural performances! But we think that the best thing about this event is the atmosphere - it's such a supportive, fun and friendly feeling in the crowd, so hopefully some of this spirit passes on to the marchers and those that have just arrived in Queensland!
Where is it: South Bank Parklands!
What's it all about: A multicultural festival that commemorates and celebrates the birth of Buddha!
How can I join in: Check out the program and head down to South Bank to experience this enlightening festival - there are numerous events running across the weekend!
Tell me more: Brisbane's Buddha Birth Day Festival runs every year to commemorate the birth of Gautama Buddha. It's a significant celebration throughout a lot of eastern Asia and given our proximity to the region, it's little wonder as to why it remains such a popular event on Brisbane's calendar - and it's been running for over 20 years! As well as a celebration for the Buddhist community, the festival promotes itself as being a multicultural event, open to people of all ages, backgrounds or religions. There are a number of events on including singing, dancing, meditating and heaps more - even fireworks at night! It's certainly a festival with a difference and one not to be missed!
