Where is it: All over Australia - here in Brisbane it's on at King George Square in the city!
What's it all about: Ice skating in Brisbane? Yes! That's right! Skating At set up pop-up ice skating rinks in many of Australia's cities, and Brisbane doesn't miss out!
Tell me more: Seeing an open ice skating rink here in Brisbane is definitely not an everyday occurrence, so when one does pop-up in the winter holidays, you just know that it's going to be popular! And for good reason - our winter days here in Brissy are generally beautiful and clear and not to cold, and although it may be a bit of a novelty to most of us here, it is so much fun! For those of non-skaters, it's a fantastic activity for the little kids and with a few pointers they will have picked it up and in no time most likely they will have surpassed us parents! So book in ahead - sessions are 45 minutes and include skate hire. For the little guys there are also 'Kanga' skating aids which they can use for support, or sit on and be pushed around - there's also an awesome ramp - the 'Runway' - that you can slide down in a rubber tube (if you're game), and food and drinks available too! Such a fun activity and a fantastic little change from the ordinary!

A small ice skating rink has been set up inside the centre for “winterpilly”! All the gear is supplied so there’s no need to bring anything, no need to book and no need to pay! Just turn up and register for your free 20 minute session. A really fun school holiday activity and a great way to introduce your kids to ice skating!
Where is it: Stanthorpe, Southern Downs Region
What's it all about: A celebration of winter in Queensland’s coldest town!
Tell me more: Stanthorpe is well known in Queensland for its cold weather, so why not celebrate it! This very new 3 day festival has been ‘warmly’ received by both locals and tourists alike with plenty of entertainment over festival including live music, roaming entertainers, games, rides and movies! There’s also markets and fireworks! But main attraction for the festival has to be at the ‘Snowgrounds’ - two snow fields for snowman building and snowball fights, an ice skating rink and giant snow globes! So much fun!
Where is it: King George Square, Brisbane CBD
What's it all about: An ice-skating attempt to set a new Australian record!
Tell me more: Brisbane isn’t really the first place that you think of when you think ice skating (especially with the beautiful weather of late!), but Australia’s first ever Winter Olympic gold medallist did train here! We joined a very keen group for an early morning ice skate in Brisbane’s King George Square for an attempt to break the Australian record for the longest ice skating conga line! Yes, we know that this record is a little obscure, but then to a lot of locals here think that ice skating in Brisbane is a bit obscure! But this event was for a great cause – raising money for Variety – the children’s charity and it was heaps of fun – it was the first time our little guys had tried skating and they loved it! And after all that we’re still not too sure if we broke the record – we were having too much fun to take notice!
