Where is it: Numerous locations throughout the Darling Downs region, just to the west of Brisbane!
Why we love it: Amazing fields of magnificent flowers – how could we not love this!
Tell me more: The Darling Downs region is one of the most fertile farming areas in Australia, and every summer the fields are lit up by thousands of beautiful sunflowers! There are a number of different locations where you can see sunflowers but we chose a drive that took us to through the towns of Pilton, Clifton and Allora before heading back with a quick stop for a dip at Lake Moogerah! Heading south west from Brisbane, these small towns are all closely located in a picturesque region and are about 2 hours’ drive away.
We headed off not knowing exactly where the sunflowers were and we had plenty of time allowed so that we could explore and take in the sights of this lovely farming area. There were lots of colourful sorghum crops around which looked really nice, but not exactly what we were looking for. It wasn’t long before we came across our first sunflower field at Clifton! There were some beautiful flowers there but we might have been a couple of weeks late as a lot of the flowers looked a little past their prime. We kept driving to the little town of Allora and just on the outskirts of town we found another field – this time looking a lot better! So beautiful!
Sunflowers bloom throughout summer, but like all flowers they don’t last forever – so time your drive. When visiting the sunflowers, please be mindful that these crops belong to the property owners, so don’t do anything that could damage the crops. Some farms welcome visitors, so keep an eye out on social media or contact any of the local information centres to find out where to go. And don’t forget to drop in to the local stores and have a look around while you are out there!
